Why Dilip Vengsarkar is so right [29/05 06:32PM]

When an expert like Dilip Vengsarkar says that the Indian Premier League will have a damaging on Indian cricket’s fortunes on the international stage then the mandarins of the BCCI need to sit up and take notice. The IPL may have provided entertainment and boosted the bank balances of players, but one shudders to think what toll it has taken on the bodies of our national cricketers.
Vengsarkar is one former cricketer who has never shied away from speaking his mind against the establishment and the man has no agendas. He does not have many listeners in the corridors of power simply because they don’t want to hear the truth.

At the moment, all logic is covered with the greed to rake in the moolah under the guise of cricket entertainment. Sure, the entertainment aspect is critical but not to a point where it fractures the very spirit and enthusiasm of the men who play it. Rusty engines are never known to be in peak condition. Why should it be different for cricketers?

Bingo!
Vengsarkar said it right. Bold and right. Take out the money offered from IPL to the cricketers and see what's left? T20 is not the real sport to run after. They should pump the money into test cricket and one day. Make test cricket and one day innovative and competetive on the world platform. Its upto the Senior cricketers and the talented cricketers to save the cricket. BCCI and the people around are killing and giving wrong direction.

Vengsarkar
Dilip is right. 20-20s have high entertainment value but do not enhance cricketing skills as bowlers bowl with one hand tied behind their back! Too much of it is counterproductive. To have a tournament for a month and a half with all the main Indian players playing every second day is very taxing on the body & mind. The intensity during the 20 0vers whether batting, bowling or fielding is very high as even a small lapse can mean be disastrous. Yes, the players are paid more than they can dream of but human bodies also undergo "wear and tear" no matter how supremely fit one is. Many commentators in such columns do not seem to appreciate this aspect and expect players to entertain them day and night at the same level just because they are paid highly! BCCI has to strike a balance between the ODIs and Tests( which represent the real test of skills) or else the player burn out will be an issue. What is more important for BCCI -playing with pride for one's country or frolicking in a "hit and giggle" game playing for a regional club? While it is raking in all the moolah it should pause to think if its greed is killing the milch cow!

This tamasha has to stop
The IPL is a serious danger to international cricket. It is merely a scheme of some crooks to hijack the sport for their greedy monetary desires. Cricket, especially test cricket is being hit hard and this tamasha of IPL has to stop.

Lalit Modi
Lalit, u take pride in putting up a great show at IPL2 in South Africa in two weeks time. Can u take up the challenge of making Test Cricket "REAL CRICKET" as entertaining as T20 within a year. I think NO. U will not accept this challenge for MONEY is not involved and neither is limelight. If you are a true CRICKET LOVER, then take up the challenge and plan something. U need advise, thoughts, ideas, go public and see them pouring in. WHAT SAY LALIT???????????

20/20 is the future of cricket. Test and 50/50 cricket is the thing of the past. People who hang on to it is just because of nostalgia, or to just keep on grinding for for 5 days. GO 20/20 !!!!!

Pressure
Now the real pressure is on MSD to take up a challenge for retaining the World Championship Title in T20 format. And also to prove all speculation wrong (being optimistic). Forget what happend in past (month of May 09) and lets start a fresh month of June 09 with more challenging and entertaining go ahead. Men in Blue, u guys will rock and every INDIAN will walk behind and stand by you'll, what may the result be. #*#*#"BEST OF LUCK AND LET THE TEAM SPIRIT GET GOING"*#*#*.

Vengsarkar
I think these reactions are similar to the ones when we started off with 50 overs cricket and the people who were fans of 5 days cricket were pessimistic that 50 overs cricket will kill the cricket as such but no not at all , criket has moved with times and if we do not move with time we shall be left out in the oblivion no one will bother to turn the pages and gather any information , infact 20/20 is speed and intellect put together , the technique combined with speed is the need of hour , who has one full day to watch 2 sides fighting in my opinion 20 over cricket is a good idea and if money is there now then the natural game will always reign supreme sanjay

T20 rocks
I totally disagree with Mr. Vengsarkar. based on some facts mentioned below. A) In these times, we could not take out 8-9 hrs a day to watch a ODI or a test match, work pressures are very high in metros specially, so it acts as a stress releiver for us to watch a quick game in a couple of hrs. B) A same lot of cricketers (with due respect) play test match or ODI for India for almost 15 years. T20 gives platform for lot of young cricketers especially coming from small towns. best example is the man himself MSD, others like Y pathan, Kamran Khan, to name a few. C) In a country like India where millions dream of wearing a blue cap, a ray of hope is seen thru this format. D) And if you talk about physical stress on the players, lets not forget the kind of money they get paid. Common people like you and me undergo equal physical and mental stress thru our daily chores and yet we dream to get that kind of money or even a fraction of it. E) People from the upper class of the society would not spend a fortune to go to Joberg to watch a test match , however upper middle class guys have made their way to the same venue to watch a T20 game. F) Finally, lets not forget what cricket is to Indians, it has always been our passion, watever format it was, but honestly think abt the passion going up after we won the T20 cup and the adreline keeps rushing every time we watch one. Wat say guys......let me know if you guys think otherwise....

TP
Vengsarkar speaks crap....He hasn't been in limelight for many days hence giving some weired comments... Don't be worried about the players since as long as MONEY is there, they will give their cent percent

Cricket is a pro. game, stop being a sissy
Guys, wake up! Today's cricket is competitive sport played by pros., not in the years gone by, where cricket was played with a full time job in tow. Cricketers have to take care of their your own body and make sure they are ready for the next game. IPL has relvead a fact that a cricketer will play his best, and make sure he is fit, if he not worried about his personal coffers. A cricketer is a comodity that fetches a price. It's like when you go for a job interview, you want to present your best to get that job..and once hired you need to produce a 100%, so why take this differently? and stop with the kid gloves.. today's sport person is a pro.
