It’s interesting that television broadcasters Sony appealed to the New Zealand board to start the India vs NZ Test matches at 12 noon which would enable the Indian audience to start their cricket watching day at a more decent hour than 3.30 am. The smart television company would also gain more eyeballs.
In a victory for the interests of the game, the request was turned down but don’t be surprised if television has its way for the next two Tests. TV’s influence in this game just cannot be under-rated. Obviously, whoever made that suggestion/appeal didn’t think of the poor bowlers’ liking of the morning conditions.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni played it right when he expressed how odd it would be to start at 12 noon. Wonder whether the International Cricket Council was taken into consideration while this appeal was made. Though the host country is responsible for key decisions, the final call should be made by the ICC, the big boss of cricket.
If public interest has to be make it in the mix, then it’s best such ‘innovative’ thinking be restricted to one-day cricket because that’s the best form of the game where all experimentation should be done.
Be that as it may, it will be sad to see the new ball bowlers be the deprived party in any form of the game. The second session (when NZ didn’t lose a wicket after losing six wickets in the morning session) of the first day on Wednesday proved that the first half of the day should belong to the bowlers.
